Shaving Chris Purvis's Head for Charity!!

In early September, we had a big empty plastic jar that once contained pretzels. As a joke, I cut a slit on the top and slapped a label on it stating that we were taking up a fund to have one of our employees “fixed". It was just a joke, and we all had a good laugh. I later threw out the suggestion to my friend and coworker, Chris Purvis, that we should take up a collection and do a 50/50 I asked him if we get up $500 for a 50/50 could we shave his head? We would put half to a charity, and he’d get the other half. Since Pep Boys just sent out an email about October being Breast Cancer Awareness month, we decided that the Susan G. Koman Foundation would be the charity. Chris agreed to allow us to shave his head, but he did not want this to be a 50/50; he wanted all proceeds to go to the Koman Foundation.

A number of us got together and discussed the best way to get the word out about this little endeavor. We decided that we should take his picture for a before shot, and modify the picture for a mock after shot (see photos below). We circulated the flyer and got a huge response.

When this all started we did not know that Karen Volpe, the fiancée of Steve Kratz who is an employees here at Pep Boys, had been battling breast cancer. Karen lost her battle with the disease on October 1 at the age of 47 When Chris learned this, he insisted that the money raised could be donated in her name.

Because of Chris's willingness to raised a total of $660.00 that we would like to donate in Karen Volpe’s name.

These are the photos that we used on the flyers to raise money for the Susan G. Koman foundation.
